What is Pilates?

Joseph Pilates
Joseph Pilates

Pilates is a physical fitness system that was developed in the early 20th century by the Greek German-born Joseph Pilates (1883-1967).   Pilates originally called his method “contrology” (from “control” and Greek).

The Classical lineage of Pilates follows a series of exercises that are performed in a particular order on the Mat and Reformer, depending on level.  Pilates is not the same as Yoga, although both are excellent forms of exercise.

Our bodies are meant to move. Pilates is not mindless exercise. You will spend an hour just thinking about yourself and your body and what it needs. The concepts you learn in Pilates transfer to your everyday life and this is how you can see life altering changes.
